The language of infertiles

I am almost 12 weeks pregnant. By now, many fertiles have officially announced, have baby shower ideas and are happily in the bliss of being pregnant.

I, on the other hand, have done almost nothing (despite showing a bit so it's becoming hard to hide).

And I notice that my choice of language is still VERY infertile sounding.

Some examples:

"If they both survive, we're having twins."

"If they both make it, we won't make our due date."

In a text to my two SiLs today: "When / if it comes time, can you ladies help me set up a baby registry?"

At any given ultrasound recently, with total surprise: "Oh, they're still in there!"

There are more. What other ones have you ladies found yourselves using?

I must reek of infertility with my choice of words. I wonder if / when it goes away!

  1. Haha! I love to speak in "what ifs" as that has been my life for 15 years.

  2. Aw, it does get better my dear! Nothing is for sure until the baby is here in your arms, but you will start to become a little more secure in it as time goes on! Hang in there!

  3. I'm at 14 weeks and haven't planned a single thing. I was wondering if I was "behind." I just emailed good friends to tell them the news and I am totally freaked out now that I jinxed my pregnancy. I guess I haven't been using too many infertile terms- even while I was in the first trimester, but I'm definitely more nervous than my pregnant fertile friends!

  4. So guilty over here... and I can imagine I'd be doing the same things even if I was pregant. I'm ALWAYS saying, "if we ever have kids..." or "if we get to be parents...". It's NEVER "when" anymore. I'm not sure exactly why or when it changed, but I think somehwere along the line, I realized that there are no guarantees. My language has adjusted to that mindset. Hoping you can find some confidence and peace in your pregnacy soon!
